[ARCHIVED] Town of Indian Trail Receives $10 Million from the State

State Funding Dollars_News

In its most recent biennium budget, as part of the State Appropriations Act of 2021, the state of North Carolina allocated more the $10 million to the Town of Indian Trail to be used for various infrastructure and amenity projects. As of March 11, Indian Trail has received these funds and can begin working on these projects, which include road improvements, a new park and signage upgrades.

“We have heard from our residents that improved infrastructure, a downtown and more green space are all things they desire for our community,” said Town Manager Mike McLaurin. “And these are things that our Council and staff want to, and that we’ve been planning for a while now. The funding we received from the state will allow us to get started on some of these projects, turning visions into reality.”

Indian Trail received the funds in three different categories. The first is $10,000,000 from the North Carolina State Capital and Infrastructure Fund. These funds will be used to:

  • Help make improvements to Indian Trail Road, including the burial of utility lines and expanding the construction improvements. The upgrades will be an integral part of creating the downtown atmosphere that will bring the community together and give Indian Trail residents a walkable place to dine, shop, live and be entertained.
  • Increase the resurfacing contract for the next two years, which will allow Indian Trail to improve additional town-owned roads.
  • Reconstruct and widen Shady Bluff Road to allow two-way traffic and provide another entrance/exit from Chestnut Square Park.

The second category of funding also comes from the State Capital and Infrastructure Fund in the amount of $250,000 for Parks improvements. The Town will use this funding to develop a new park on Town-owned property near the Holly Park subdivision.

The final category of funding comes from the Rural Economic Development Division of the NC Department of Commerce in the amount of $50,000. These funds will be used to improve signage within Town limits, including updating the wayfinding signs throughout Indian Trail.

“We are grateful to Indian Trail’s State Representatives Dean Arp and David Willis and State Senator Todd Johnson for their work in getting these funds for Indian Trail,” said Mayor David Cohn. “The dollars will allow us to begin projects that will benefit our entire community, and we plan to get started as soon as possible. We anticipate completing the signage projects this year and beginning design work on the new park by the end of the year. The road improvement projects will take longer as they are larger in nature, but we plan to start them all by next year. This is an exciting time for Indian Trail, and we look forward to sharing it with our residents.”
